The Futuro Media Group seeks a highly organized and self-motivated student or young professional to join their dynamic team as a Social Media and Marketing Intern within the organization’s Development team. This individual must have excellent communication and organizational skills to assist the development department within the Futuro Media Group. He/She should be capable of strategic thinking, asking questions and taking initiative, as well as someone who can roll up their sleeves and do tasks with a smile on their face. This internship position would be best-suited for individuals interested in marketing, social media outreach, digital content strategy, and fundraising.

Location: Harlem, New York

Hours: Flexible, Part-time, Volunteer.

Compensation: $15 a day for travel expenses. If applicable, academic credit can be provided.

The Futuro Media Group is an independent nonprofit organization committed to producing ethical journalism from a POC perspective and representing the new American mainstream. Based in Harlem and founded in 2010 by award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, our multimedia journalism explores and gives a critical voice to the diversity of the American experience. We are dedicated to telling stories from perspectives often overlooked. The Futuro Media Group produces Latino USA, NPR’s only English-language national Latino news and cultural weekly radio program, preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2018. The organization also produces PBS’s America By The Numbers with Maria Hinojosa, In The Thick, and Humanizing America.

Reports to: Semele Turro, Senior Development Officer

Overall function: The Social Media and Marketing Intern will provide marketing, digital content, and social media outreach support to the development team.  Please note that this is NOT a journalism/production internship.

Main internship tasks and opportunities:

  • Responsible for creating our bi-monthly newsletter on MailChimp
  • Will assist the team in creating a social media strategy and schedule to engage our digital audience and increase our online presence
  • Creating digital imagery and video content that further enhances our brand as a nonprofit news organization
  • Assessing our social media and Google analytics and pulling data that helps with our fundraising and marketing goals
  • Assist the development team in creating an annual report with online data and analytics retrieved

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in using MailChimp, Google Analytics, AdWords, Adobe Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, and Photoshop preferred
  • Interest in developing marketing skills and impact strategy for a digital news organization
  • Interest in marketing and branding, nonprofit management, and journalism is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment to identify and solve problems
  • Well-organized and strong time management skills
  • Proofreading skills and enthusiasm for the craft of fundraising
  • A knack for developing relationships with internal and external colleagues
  • Ability to work independently while also fitting into a small, focused team
  • Accept productive criticism and feedback intended to help you grow
  • Eagerness to learn
  • A love of journalism and podcasts is a plus
