The Futuro Media Group seeks a highly organized and self-motivated student or young professional to join their dynamic team as a Data and Research Intern within the organization’s Development team. This individual must have excellent communication and organizational skills to assist the development department within the Futuro Media Group. He/She should be capable of strategic thinking, asking questions and taking initiative, as well as someone who can roll up their sleeves and do tasks with a smile on their face. This internship position would be best-suited for individuals interested in developing nonprofit management experience, Salesforce experience, and conducting research on prospective foundations and individuals.

Location: Harlem, New York

Hours: Flexible, Part-time, Volunteer.

Compensation:  $15 a day for travel expenses. If applicable, academic credit can be provided.

The Futuro Media Group is an independent nonprofit organization committed to producing ethical journalism from a POC perspective and representing the new American mainstream. Based in Harlem and founded in 2010 by award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, our multimedia journalism explores and gives a critical voice to the diversity of the American experience. We are dedicated to telling stories from perspectives often overlooked. The Futuro Media Group produces Latino USA, NPR’s only English-language national Latino news and cultural weekly radio program, preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2018. The organization also produces PBS’s America By The Numbers with Maria Hinojosa, In The Thick, and Humanizing America.

Reports to: Semele Turro, Major Gifts Officer

Overall function: The Data and Research Intern will provide database and research support to the fundraising team. Please note that this is NOT a journalism internship.

Main internship tasks and opportunities:

  • Help maintain our development database on Salesforce
  • Conduct prospect research and recommend major donors and foundations for portfolio
  • Manage Google Alerts for major donors and prospects
  • Assist the development team in prioritizing and sourcing of individual and foundation prospects.
  • Stay on top of philanthropic news
  • Assist the development team assess journalistic impact by compiling, recording, and organizing our current impact driven work
  • Assist in the production of events, if applicable

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in using Salesforce, Guidestar, and Foundation Search preferred
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality about sensitive information
  • Experience working with CRM databases and prospect research is a plus
  • Interest in development, nonprofit management, and journalism is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment to identify and solve problems
  • Well-organized and strong time management skills
  • Proofreading skills and enthusiasm for the craft of fundraising
  • Have a knack for developing relationships with internal and external colleagues
  • Ability to work independently while also fitting into a small, focused team
  • Accept productive criticism and feedback intended to help you grow
  • Eagerness to learn
  • A love of journalism and podcasts is a plus
