The Futuro Media Group seeks a highly skilled and experienced entrepreneurial media executive and ambassador who will help to shape and guide the organization’s strategic vision and long-term sustainability.
The Futuro Media Group is an independent nonprofit organization producing multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diversity of the American experience. Based in Harlem and founded in 2010 by award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, Futuro Media is committed to creating multimedia content for and about the new American mainstream in the service of empowering people to navigate the complexities of an increasingly diverse and connected world.
Futuro Media produces Latino USA, NPR’s only national Latino news and cultural weekly radio program; America By The Numbers with Maria Hinojosa, a documentary series on PBS revealing the human stories behind America’s dramatic demographic changes; In The Thick, a political podcast from the perspective of journalists of color; and Humanizing America, a digital-shorts web series distributed by NBCNews.com that presents intimate profiles of diverse Americans. Futuro Media also produces live, civic engagement events in conjunction with content aired on our various media properties that promote community dialogues on race, culture, and ethnicity.
Reporting to the Board of Directors and working closely with Futuro Media’s President & CEO Maria Hinojosa, the Executive Director (ED) will spearhead all business and development efforts, overseeing the following areas of responsibility: day-to-day management, budgeting and accounting functions, administrative and HR functions, communications, development strategy, marketing and partnership relationships, operations, and legal affairs.
In particular, the ED will be expected to develop and implement a business strategy that creates a sustainable business model for Futuro Media, including new business ventures and revenue generating opportunities. The ED will manage Futuro Media’s editorial teams, build operational capacity and grow the earned income aspect of the organization.
The ideal candidate has achieved success as a non-profit leader and media professional and is ready to assume responsibility for the overall operation of a growing, and innovative media non-profit. The ED must be comfortable in an entrepreneurial environment; have senior level administrative experience in a non-profit, media, broadcasting, or digital media setting; possess an exceptionally high level of personal responsibility; and be comfortable managing back-end processes, including creating strategic partnerships, engaging with donors, negotiating contracts, and shaping and implementing short/long range plans in a fast-paced environment. The ED will lead a team of people with diverse skills and must be adept at staff leadership and development, and culturally competent, capable of integrating smoothly into a diverse office culture.
