The Futuro Media Group seeks a highly skilled and experienced entrepreneurial media executive and ambassador who will help to shape and guide the organization’s strategic vision and long-term sustainability.

The Futuro Media Group is an independent nonprofit organization producing multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diversity of the American experience. Based in Harlem and founded in 2010 by award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, Futuro Media is committed to creating multimedia content for and about the new American mainstream in the service of empowering people to navigate the complexities of an increasingly diverse and connected world.

Futuro Media produces Latino USA, NPR’s only national Latino news and cultural weekly radio program; America By The Numbers with Maria Hinojosa, a documentary series on PBS revealing the human stories behind America’s dramatic demographic changes; In The Thick, a political podcast from the perspective of journalists of color; and Humanizing America, a digital-shorts web series distributed by that presents intimate profiles of diverse Americans. Futuro Media also produces live, civic engagement events in conjunction with content aired on our various media properties that promote community dialogues on race, culture, and ethnicity.

Reporting to the Board of Directors and working closely with Futuro Media’s President & CEO Maria Hinojosa, the Executive Director (ED) will spearhead all business and development efforts, overseeing the following areas of responsibility: day-to-day management, budgeting and accounting functions, administrative and HR functions, communications, development strategy, marketing and partnership relationships, operations, and legal affairs.

In particular, the ED will be expected to develop and implement a business strategy that creates a sustainable business model for Futuro Media, including new business ventures and revenue generating opportunities. The ED will manage Futuro Media’s editorial teams, build operational capacity and grow the earned income aspect of the organization.

The ideal candidate has achieved success as a non-profit leader and media professional and is ready to assume responsibility for the overall operation of a growing, and innovative media non-profit. The ED must be comfortable in an entrepreneurial environment; have senior level administrative experience in a non-profit, media, broadcasting, or digital media setting; possess an exceptionally high level of personal responsibility; and be comfortable managing back-end processes, including creating strategic partnerships, engaging with donors, negotiating contracts, and shaping and implementing short/long range plans in a fast-paced environment. The ED will lead a team of people with diverse skills and must be adept at staff leadership and development, and culturally competent, capable of integrating smoothly into a diverse office culture.

The Executive Director will be responsible for:

  • Creating new funding streams, including growing the earned income aspect of the organization
  • Defining strategies for program development, with input from senior editorial staff; setting and directing organizational priorities
  • Refining and implementing an annual strategic plan and fundraising strategy for achieving fundraising goals, with input from The Board of Directors
  • Building and managing a financial plan and budget that is in line with the strategic plan
  • Functioning as a visible, effective, and well-respected spokesperson representing The Futuro Media Group externally to media, partners, donors, and the wider business and non-profit community
  • Developing and maintaining strategic relationships with distribution partners, funding sources and donors
  • Overseeing the implementation of a communications/public relations plan for maximum impact
  • Overseeing finance and accounting systems and processes consistent with the needs of a non-profit organization
  • Overseeing management of human resources systems and processes implementing best practices in staff development, benefits, compensation, etc.
  • Managing contract negotiations with distributors, vendors, and contractors
  • Overseeing management of Public Radio and Television Station Relations
  • Managing internal office operations, including the purchase and maintenance of office equipment, leases, IT systems, etc.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving challenges as needed

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred or equivalent experience in nonprofit management with strong business acumen
  • 8-10 years senior management experience
  • Track record of successful development and philanthropic campaigns
  • Understanding of current trends in public, commercial, and digital media
  • Media management experience preferred; experience in journalism a plus
  • Experience working collaboratively with and reporting to Board of Directors
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with proven ability to focus, prioritize, and implement
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills: can speak compellingly about the organization, its mission, and its goals
  • Knowledge of Spanish language a plus
